Squeaky wheel gets the grease [28 Nov 2009|10:48am]

I have never been one for complaining, but last night was ridiculous.

For weeks I'd been in the not so good second heroic toc 10 (doing 25% dps on beasts and watching everyone fail hard on simple issues), but last night I'd had enough and bitched until I got into the first group.

Also quite pleased cause the first group had creme de la creme of our guild, and I held my own and surpassed them in some fights.

Thank GOODNESS for that cause we got A Tribute To Mad Skill :D

Only crappy part of all this is a good friend of mine bowed out to let me in the group, despite pointing out to GL and others that I'd never been past the beasts and it'd be a real officer/gl thing to do to switch me in. But said friend is getting a delicious chocolate cake for being so nice.

Also, not sure if this would have happened if I wasn't a girl...

Grats to everyone who has it already, and what are you guys working on afterwards? I'm thinking ulduar might get a visit.

Region Finds U.S. Lacking on Honduras

By GINGER THOMPSON
Published: November 27, 2009

WASHINGTON — Drug cartels are running amok in Mexico, Raúl Castro is tightening his grip on Cuba and Hugo Chávez of Venezuela is making mischief with Russia and Iran, but it is a relatively obscure backwater, Honduras, that has provided the Obama administration with its first test in Latin America.

The ouster of Manuel Zelaya, the Honduran populist president, five months ago propelled the deeply impoverished country onto President Obama’s packed agenda. The question now is whether his administration’s support for the presidential election being held there on Sunday will be seen as a stamp of approval for a coup or, as senior administration members maintain, the beginning of the end of the crisis.

Most countries in the region see it as the former. Haunted by ghosts of authoritarian governments not long in the grave, countries like Brazil, Argentina and Chile have argued that an election held by an illegal government is, by definition, illegal.

What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been [28 Nov 2009|09:31am]

The title is deceiving. I'm not talking about the achievement, though there probably should be a feat of strength for something like this.

You know you play far too much WoW when your character screen looks like this:

Ain't it Nifty the Alts are... 60? It only took me a year, I swear. )

The good thing about this is that now all of my characters are in Outland. The bad news is that they're in desperate need of a tune up. Some characters, like my rogue, have suddenly become super squishy upon entering Outland. Others have surprised me and have become really resilient, such as my warrior and shaman.

This is where I turn to you, ladies and lurking gents. I have guides to help out, but I also have questions that I can't seem to find concrete answers for. Also any general leveling/instance/pvp advice for any of the classes, aside from mage and hunter since they're my 80s, would be wonderful. :)

Below is a list of my alts, their armories, the links I've used so far to help them level, and a little picture to put a face to their names (because with that many A names they're bound to get mixed up).

I think I'm addicted. )

Thank you so much in advance for any advice and tips. :)

So now I'm curious, I want to see your character screen(s). How long have you been playing? How long did it take you to get your characters to where they're at now? Did you get any help along the way such as RAF, Heirloom gear, and AV, or did you do it the old school way?

For me my hunter was the only toon untouched with XP bonuses outside of rested XP. Everyone single other toon was part of RAF and had at least one piece of heirloom gear to work with. The newer 60s (Warrior, Shaman, Rogue, Druid) all also played so much AV that they have anywhere from 100-1000 kills.

Families of Military Suicides Seek White House Condolences [28 Nov 2009|08:17pm]

ontd_political

[stardust9121]
Since at least the time of Abraham Lincoln, presidents have sent letters of condolence to the families of service members killed in action, whether the deaths came by hostile fire or in an accident.

So after his son killed himself in Iraq in June, Gregg Keesling expected that his family would receive a letter from President Obama. What it got instead was a call from an Army official telling family members that they were not eligible because their son had committed suicide.

“We were shocked,” said Mr. Keesling, 52, of Indianapolis.

Under an unwritten policy that has existed at least since the Clinton administration, presidents have not sent letters to survivors of troops who took their own lives, even if it was at the war front, officials say. The roots of that policy, which has been passed from administration to administration via White House protocol officers, are murky and probably based in the view that suicide is not an honorable way to die, administration and military officials say.

But at a time when the Pentagon is trying to destigmatize mental health care in hopes of stemming a near epidemic of suicide among service members, the question of whether the survivors of military suicides deserve presidential recognition has taken on new significance.

“These families already feel such shame and so alienated from the military and the country, a letter from the president might give them some comfort, some sense that people recognize their sacrifice,” said Kim Ruocco, director for suicide support for Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, or TAPS, a military support group. “What better way to eliminate stigma?”

As suicide has crept out of the shadows and become a front-burner problem for the military... )

Source.

I had no idea this policy existed. That's awful.

Also, this bit, both vague and infuriating: "But opponents of presidential letters of condolence argue that treating suicide the same as other war deaths might encourage mentally frail soldiers to take their lives by making the act seem honorable."

...Seriously? Who the hell are these "opponents" saying that?

South Korean Man Fined for Slandering Indian Professor [28 Nov 2009|10:57pm]

ontd_political

[shonen_key]
A Korean man was fined 1 million won ($855) Friday for insulting an Indian professor. This is the first time in Korea that a person has been punished for racist remarks.

The Incheon District Court fined the 31-year-old man, identified as Park, for humiliating the foreigner through abusive and racial language on a bus in July.

After the incident, the 28-year-old Indian professor Bonojit Hussain accused Park of calling him "dirty" and "smelly." Initially, police allegedly discouraged Hussain from filing a complaint but he persisted. Human rights groups also launched a fact-finding team to investigate the case.

Police filed a personal insult charge against Park as there is no appropriate clause in Korea's Criminal Law against this kind of an offense.

According to Hussain, Park even insulted his Korean female friend, who was traveling with him on the bus asking whether she is happy to date a black man.

Following the incident, civic activists formed an anti-racism committee and asked the human rights watchdog agency to look into the case.

Some lawmakers have been pushing for a bill to ban discriminatory practices against foreigners based on either color or nationality.

The case has raised awareness of racial issues in the country where 1.2 million foreigners reside.

I come to you ladies once again with another (probably) dumb question.

Is it possible to downgrade your game account? I'm trying to send a scroll of resurrection to my sister but it says accounts already upgraded to Lich King aren't able to do it. Is there a way to unlink the Lich King expansion from her account so she only has Burning Crusade?

Thanks in advance!

WoW Magazine [28 Nov 2009|01:13pm]

Hello ladies,

I was just wondering if any of you know when the first edition of the magazine is supposed to be released. I subscribed to it a while ago and I rember it saying it would be arriving between 8 or 10 weeks. Now I can't find that form any more, so I am not sure when the magazine should be arriving at my house.

I share a mailbox with all my other neighbours in my flat and I know some are a bit ... well... let's just call them little thieves when it comes to magazines and all. I've tried looking on the website of the magazine, but I only saw a 'subscribe' link and nothing else that could be useful.

Thanks all :)

ps. Sorry mods, I don't really know how to tag this correctly.

Middle school students tried to poison teacher [28 Nov 2009|03:36am]

ontd_political

[littletoyguns]
Three middle school students in Waltham are facing serious trouble.

According to police, three McDevitt Middle School students tried to get their teacher to drink some type of cleaning solution by hiding it in her water bottle on the morning of November 12.

Fortunately, the teacher was unharmed as she noticed that her water bottle had been tampered with in time.

Local residents said they are glad the teacher noticed in time.

"That's a crime, if somebody can be injured like that, because if she doesn't smell it before drinking it, then it can be very dangerous," said one man.

Household cleaners, especially those with ammonia or bleach, can lead to vomiting, internal burning and bleeding, organ damage, and even death.

The police investigation concluded that the students, two 13-year olds and a 12-year old, put some sort of cleaner in the water bottle. It is unclear how much, but the teacher was able to smell it.

All three students have been charged with attempted poisoning and were suspended indefinitely.

i realize there are tons of questions about sephora all the time, but i don't know where else to ask/look.
My question is: are Sephora eyeshadows & mascaras tested on animals? i mean the sephora brand itself.
I already emailed the sephora in my country (i'm in south europe) but they are not replying.
The ingredients of the eyeshadows that i would be pressumably getting are vegan (checked) (still have to check the mascara though) but it's the testing that keeps me wondering

Minaret Ban In Switzerland Set For A Vote

The campaign posters are inflammatory: Minarets rising like missiles from the national flag.

A proposal championed by right-wing parties to ban minarets in Switzerland goes to a nationwide vote on Sunday in a referendum that has set off an emotional debate about national identity and stirred fears of boycotts and violent reactions from Muslim countries.

With tensions running high, the Geneva Mosque was vandalized Thursday by unidentified individuals who threw a pot of pink paint at the building's entrance.

It was the third incident against the mosque this month: earlier, a vehicle with a loudspeaker drove through the area imitating a muezzin's call to prayer, and vandals threw cobble stones at the building, damaging a mosaic.

Business leaders say a minaret ban would be disastrous for the Swiss economy because it could drive away wealthy Muslims who bank in Switzerland, buy the country's luxury goods, and frequent its resorts.

The vote taps into anxieties about Muslims that have been rippling through Europe in recent years, ranging from French fears of women in body veils to Dutch alarm over the murder by a Muslim fanatic of a filmmaker who made a documentary that criticized Islam.

Polls indicate growing support for the proposal submitted by the anti-immigrant Swiss People's Party, but it was doubtful it will gain enough momentum to pass. Muslims in Switzerland have kept a low profile, refraining from a counter-campaign.

"Switzerland's good reputation as an open, tolerant and secure country may be lost and this would bring a blow to tourism,"
said Swiss Hotel Association spokesman Thomas Allemann.
